Racism in Japan
“The pride of this country that has been built up by the Yamato (Japanese) race must be passed down to our children, otherwise there will be no future for the country,” said Masahito Fujikawa, 49, an LDP-backed candidate in the Aichi electoral district.

This in response to the idea that permanent residents of Japan should be able to vote in local elections.

Watch out for those filthy foreigners in other words...

The LDP was the ruling party from the 50s to last year, and that attitude - one people, one race, one nation is sadly very widespread.

I see. Well, it's to be expected in a country with so little in the way of ethnic minorities, and so little history of immigration. Most countries are more like this than you'd think. The UK is less so because its Imperial history has led to wave after wave of immigration. Even so, it's far from perfect, of course; immigration is still a hot topic (more so than when you last lived here, due to a wave of Poles etc. coming in, then the recession with all its resultant job losses), with scumparties like the BNP trading on people's prejudices.
